Guide

Does your Shopify store need a helpdesk?

A helpdesk puts email, chat, social and sometimes phone into one inbox, spreads the conversations across several people and, if you pay for the AI, answers tickets without anyone reading them. In the App Store the entry plan runs from $10 to $90 a month, and the AI is billed on top for every conversation it resolves. If you answer support yourself and nearly all of it comes in by email, you probably don't need one. Here are the numbers so you can decide.

Prices come from the public listings of eight support apps on the Shopify App Store. We checked them on 27 August 2026.

What a helpdesk comes with

This is what almost all of them ship, under one name or another.

📥

Unified inbox

Email, on-site chat, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and SMS, all on the same screen.

👥

Teamwork

Assign each conversation to someone, see who has what and how long they take.

⚙️

Macros and rules

Saved replies and automations that tag, prioritise or close tickets.

🛍️

Shopify context

The customer's order next to the conversation, so you don't go looking for it.

🤖

AI that resolves

A bot that answers and closes without anyone reading the ticket. Nearly always a separate add-on with a separate price.

📊

Reports and SLAs

Response times, volume per channel and per person, service targets.

What a helpdesk costs on the App Store

All of it comes from the App Store listings, not from what their websites say.

Paying yearlyTakes 10 to 30% off
At 200 conversations a month with the AI closing half of them, the bill usually lands between $60 and $160. With three people answering and four channels open, that's money well spent. If you answer yourself and everything comes in by email, you're paying for inboxes and seats you don't use.

So what does your store need?

See which of the two lists looks more like your week.

You need a helpdesk if…

Several channels or a team
  • You answer over chat, Instagram or phone as well as email, and want it all in one place.
  • Two or more of you reply and you need to know who answered what.
  • You want a bot closing conversations on its own, even if now and then it gets one wrong in front of a customer.
  • You need reports per person, agreed response times, or to hook it up to other tools.

Email is enough if…

Email and one or two people
  • Nearly everything comes in by email. On Instagram they ask if something's in stock, not where their order is.
  • You reply yourself, or you and one other person, from the same inbox.
  • The questions repeat: where's my order, how do I return it, how long does it take, I want another size.
  • You'd rather read what goes out under your store's name before it goes out.

If you're in the second list, your problem isn't organising channels. It's that every email costs you five or ten minutes: open Shopify, find the order, check where it is, type the same thing you typed yesterday. What actually saves you time is having the reply already written, order in front of you, when you open the email.

What mailipy does and how it differs

mailipy is an email support assistant for Shopify. It isn't a helpdesk and doesn't try to be one.

🔒 No support reply is sent without your approval
  • You approve, always. The AI writes the draft and you decide whether it goes. A bad reply under your store's name costs more than the minute it takes to read it.
  • If it's not sure, it doesn't write. Can't find the order, the request falls outside your policy, something smells like fraud: it hands you the email as is, no draft. We built it that way on purpose.
  • It learns from what you fix. When you edit a draft before sending, mailipy compares what it wrote with what you sent and pulls out a rule for next time. Over the weeks you send more untouched; you can see it under Stats.

To be clear: if you need chat, social or a team, mailipy won't do. That's a job for a helpdesk.

How to try it without changing anything

Free plan, no card. If you already use something else, no need to remove it.

1

Install mailipy from the App Store

On the free plan. Whatever you already have keeps working as before.

2

Connect the inbox you already use

Gmail, Outlook or your own domain. Customers keep writing to the same address.

3

Answer the interview

Ten minutes on shipping, returns and how you talk. That's what builds your agent.

4

Work a week from mailipy

Count how many drafts you sent untouched. That number tells you whether it's worth it.

Questions

Is mailipy a helpdesk?

No. It reads your inbox, finds the order in Shopify and leaves the reply written for you to approve. No chat, no social, no team management. If you need those, a helpdesk will suit you better.

Can I use mailipy alongside a helpdesk?

Yes. It connects to your inbox over IMAP and doesn't get in the way of other tools reading the same mail. It's the easiest way to try it before deciding anything.

Why doesn't it send replies on its own?

Because a wrong reply costs more than the time it takes to approve one. mailipy saves you the writing, not the deciding. The only thing that does go out on its own is abandoned cart emails, and those are your own templates, approved beforehand.

What happens if I go past 200 drafts on Pro?

It stops generating drafts until next month, or until you move to Max, which is 900 a month. It doesn't charge you for the extra ones.

Where do the prices on this page come from?

From the public listings of eight support apps on the Shopify App Store, checked on 27 August 2026. They're medians and ranges, not the price of any one app. If a listing says otherwise, the listing wins.
